ANNOUNCEMENTS - BLOG
January 28th, 2008 "Man vs. Woman" won a Gold Medal for Artistic Excellence at the Park City Film Music Festival. This festival is dedicated to the contribution of music to the film medium, and because of that I consider my composer, David James Nielsen, to be the real recipient of this honor. He did a great job and I'm forever thankful. |
July 29th, 2007 "Man vs. Woman" won the "Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Film" award at the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival in San Diego! And not just among shorts, but features as well! I feel very happy about this. The film is ultimately a salute to science-fiction, and to have a Comic-Con panel recognize it is a great honor. |
July 21st, 2007 "Man vs. Woman" will be shown at the Comic-Con International Independent Film Festival at the San Diego Convention Center on Saturday July 28th at 2:20 pm. David Nielsen (the film's composer) and I will do a short Q & A session afterwards. For more info, click here |
April 29th, 2007 Although I recently learned that I did not make it on the "On the Lot" show as a contestant, I also learned that Fox liked my entry so much they wanted to use it for a promo! Friends were telling me that the Fox Movie Channel was running the promo, but I kept missing it. Finally, my friend Mario Monge (who was completely unaware of my participation on the show), happened to watch it one night and even TIVO'ed it. To watch it, click here |
April 16th, 2007 "Man vs. Woman" was shown at the Backseat Film Festival of Philadelphia, which ran from March 29th to April 1st, and I just learned that it won the "Best Short" award! Thanks to everyone involved with the festival! |
February 16th, 2007 I have entered Steven Spielberg's and Mark Burnett's filmmaking competition show "On The Lot" (coming to FOX in Spring of 2007) using 5 minutes from "Man vs. Woman" (I took the first 7 minutes and condensed them to 5). I also included a video introduction of myself, featuring the world and some of the creatures from "Man vs. Woman". Check it out here! If you can, review it. Thanks! |
February 7th, 2007 "Man vs. Woman" is playing at the Dam Short Film Festival in Boulder City, Nevada (just a short drive from Las Vegas) on Thursday, February 8th and Saturday, February 10th. |
December 6th, 2006 "Man vs. Woman" has won the Grand Jury Prize at the New York City "Picture Start Awards" festival. I feel very honored. I want to give thanks to everyone involved with the festival, and especially to Gregory Segal for extending the invitation to attend. Thank you New York! |
November 26th, 2006 "Man vs. Woman" has won the "Generacion X" award at the Cinemad 06 festival in Madrid, Spain. My most sincere thanks to everyone involved with the festival, to Servando Carballar for the "Generacion X" sponsorship, and especially to Santi Camunas for inviting me to the festival in the first place. |
October 15th, 2006 The Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival has honored "Man vs. Woman" with a "Technical Achievement Special Mention" award during their closing gala held at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood on October 15th, 2006. My gratitude goes out to Edward James Olmos, Marlene Dermer and everyone involved in organizing this wonderful and festive event. It was a pleasure and a privilege to be part of it. |

September 29th, 2006 The first online review of "Man vs. Woman" (that I am aware of) has been posted, and it's a positive one! It's on TerrorHook.com... http://www.terrorhook.com/reviews/m/mvw.html

September 28th, 2006 I have learned beforehand (which is a little unusual I guess) that "Man vs. Woman" has received (or rather will receive) the award for "Best Special Effects" at the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival which will take place in Tempe, Arizona October 27th-29th, 2006. Thanks to the festival in advanced! |
September 22nd, 2006 An article on indieWIRE.com by Kim Adelman lists "Man vs. Woman" as one of ten movies with the most "buzz" playing at both the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival... http://www.indiewire.com/movies/2006/09/believe_the_hyp.html

September 20th, 2006 "Man vs. Woman" has just been accepted into the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival which runs October 5th-15th, 2006 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood. |
September 14th, 2006 "Man vs. Woman" will screen at two more places, an expo and a festival. First, it will screen Sunday Sept. 17th at 4:30 pm as part of the "Monsters Among Robots Horror & Sci-Fi Expo" in Van Nuys, and then it will be part of the International Horror & Sci-Fi Film Festival in Tempe, Arizona October 27th-29th, 2006. |
September 8th, 2006 Last night was the LA Shorts Fest Arclight premiere of "Man vs. Woman" and it went very well. The audience seemed to have a good reaction to it. I'm getting spoiled by watching my movie in 35 mm up on a big screen with great speakers! It makes it feel like a "real" movie. I'm starting to want everyone to be able to see it this way. |
August 31st, 2006 "Man vs. Woman" was selected as one of the "Best of the Fest" at the Palm Springs International Festival of Shorts and Film Market under "Programmers' Picks"! Only six out of the 334 films competing were given this honor (a total of 2,400 films were submitted). The film played again on the last day of the festival along with all the jury winners. The theatre was packed and the audience had a great reaction to it. The two previous showings of the film (during the festival's regular run) went very well too, I had a good Q & A session and met a lot of interesting people, some of whom could eventually have a hand in helping me make the "Man vs. Woman" feature. My gratitude goes out to Darryl Macdonald, Anita Monga and everyone else involved in putting together this great festival. The film screens next at the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival (LA Shorts Fest) at the ArcLight Cinemas in Hollywood, Thursday September 7th, 2006 at 8 pm (Program 29, Theatre 9). |
July 28th, 2006 "Man vs. Woman" has been selected to be part of the 10th annual Los Angeles International Short Film Festival (LA Shorts Fest) at the ArcLight theaters in Hollywood, September 5th-14th, 2006. |
June 20th, 2006 The Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films and Film Market has invited "Man vs. Woman" to screen! The festival runs from August 24th to the 30th. This will be the "world premiere" for the film. |
June 15th, 2006 The new score is pretty much finished and it sounds great! The composer's name is David James Nielsen, who is a fellow USC grad. He did a great job creating a score that both recalls the Morricone flavor and the space opera feel. Because there was no pressing deadline to attend a festival, David ended up having over 4 months to compose and fine tune the music. He was very happy to have all this time and it shows in the final product. |
March 17th, 2006 Last night the Laguna Beach Film Society screened a DVD copy of my almost finished film (it still has a temp score and some temp effects) at the South Coast Cinema in Laguna Beach. Film festival programmer and guru Keiko Beatie saw a screener of my film (which my friend Neal Sopata had sent to her) and she liked it a lot, so she invited me to be part of this screening. She thought I should see the film with an audience, which is always a different experience than watching it alone. The screening went very well and I learned a lot about which parts of the movie the audience was getting a kick out of the most. Afterwards I had my very first Q & A session ever for the film, and it went very well. Everyone was very sweet. Thanks a lot to Keiko Beatie and the Laguna Beach Film Society for having me! |
March 3rd, 2006 Now that the film is almost done (I am just waiting for the new score to be finished), I have started to search for somebody who can help me get a lot of exposure for it. I know the film will eventually end up online, but before that happens I would like to show it at festivals, and maybe even sell it to a specialty TV network (Sci-Fi Channel?). I need a rep who can help me market it, show it to agents, get it in festivals, and even help me secure financing for the feature version. If you think you are the right person to do this, e-mail me your resume at Juan@JCVSFilms.com. |
February 5th, 2006 I have finally found a composer! Thanks to everyone who submitted for the job. There were so many great entries, it was a tough decision to make. I am confident the score will sound great when it's done. |
September 2nd, 2005 If you are a composer, and you would like to write an original score for "Man vs. Woman", please click here. |
September 1st, 2005 There are no announcements yet! This website is brand new! But stay tuned, there will be some eventually. |
